Nearly six million French press coffee makers are being recalled because the glass container could break, increasing the risk of serious burns, according to a recall notice posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall affects 5.9 million Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers after the manufacturer received 70 reports of the glass container breaking during use. Of the dozens of reports, 48 included reports of burns to the user.
Bodum USA, which issued the recall on Oct. 29, said the affected French press glass carafes could break unexpectedly if a metal spoon used to stir the coffee damages or cracks it.
Consumers with the affected French presses are urged to stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir the coffee inside the carafe. The CPSC is asking consumers to contact Bodum to receive a plastic stirring spoon to prevent any damage.
In addition to the plastic stirring spoon, customers will receive a warning label reminding them not to use damaged carafes and to avoid using metal spoons.
Which French press models are affected?
According to the CPSC notice, the affected coffee makers were sold at Target, Walmart and home goods stores nationwide, as well as online at Bodum.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com and other online retailers, between 1974 and October 2026 for about $15 to $65.
Models included in the recall are: the Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java and Kenya models with replaceable glass carafes.
Photos of the affected coffee makers are available on the CPSC website.
