Want an SUV That Will Last Forever for under $30K? These 3 Fit the Bill

News Room

If you’re looking for your next vehicle but don’t want to spend big bucks on a new model, there are plenty of reliable used options. Many used SUVs can last for thousands of miles with proper maintenance.

Buying a pre-owned SUV also opens up more powertrain, trim, and brand options for drivers on a tight budget. Here’s a ranked list of the most reliable used SUV models you can buy for under $30,000.

3. 2018 Lexus RX Hybrid F Sport

Lexus’ midsize hybrid luxury SUV model is one of the longest-lasting vehicles, according to a study by automotive research site iSeeCars.com. Used car buyers benefit from depreciation, which makes the SUV significantly more affordable. The F Sport trim is the sportiest version of the hybrid SUV and adds features like leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated F Sport front seats.

Kelley Blue Book fair market range: $25,430-$28,730

Horsepower/torque: 308 horsepower/247 pound-feet of torque

MPG: 31 city, 28 highway, 30 combined

Why I recommend it: The Lexus RX Hybrid is powerful and efficient for its segment. It retains its value well as a used SUV that can last for 250,000 miles with proper maintenance.

The RX Hybrid is a good choice for drivers who have families and want to reduce long-term fuel and repair costs. The F Sport trim adds flair and excitement.

2. 2020 Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner is known for its strong build quality and capability. It has a body-on-frame construction, and this gives the SUV truck-like reliability. The 4Runner can last upwards of 250,000 miles, and there are plenty of used model years available at affordable prices.

Kelley Blue Book fair market range: $24,830-$31,130

Horsepower/torque: 270 horsepower/278 pound-feet of torque

MPG: 16 city, 19 highway, 17 combined

Why I recommend it: I recently reviewed the 4Runner and enjoyed its durable and tough design. Toyota’s 4Runner is best for drivers who want a rugged family SUV. It has natural off-road capability, and owners can find plenty of aftermarket upgrades like skid plates, all-terrain tires and more to enhance the 4Runner.

Toyota’s family SUV may not be the most efficient for its segment, but its rock-solid reliability compensates for subpar gas mileage. If the Lexus RX Hybrid is the sporty and luxurious choice, then the 4Runner is the practical choice for adventurers.

1. 2016 Toyota Sequoia

Toyota’s Sequoia is the longest lasting vehicle, based on iSeeCars.com’s study. It’s a full-size SUV model best known for incredible longevity. The Sequoia is designed for drivers with large families looking for an SUV that outlasts its rivals. A standard V8 engine makes it appealing for buyers who want a powerful daily driver.

Kelley Blue Book fair market range: $19,240-$21,540

Horsepower/torque: 381 horsepower/401 pound-feet of torque

MPG: 13 city, 17 highway, 15 combined

Why I recommend it: I have tested the Sequoia and I wouldn’t buy a new model because of the high price ($64,725), but I’d certainly buy a used model. Used Sequoias provide amazing value as family SUVs because they benefit from depreciation and are more likely than other vehicles to last for 250,000 miles, based on research.

A reasonably-priced Sequoia can last for years without any major mechanical issues, making it a top choice for used car buyers interested in longevity. Buying a reliable used SUV and maintaining it can save you thousands of dollars in ownership costs over the vehicle’s lifespan.
