Which States Have the Cheapest Gas as National Average Nears $5?

News Room

Only nine states have gas prices at or below $4 per gallon Tuesday, May 5, as the national average pump price nears $5 per gallon.

The average price of gas rose to $4.48 per gallon on May 5, up from an average of $4.17 one week ago on April 28, according to the AAA auto club.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in an X post that drivers in the Midwest may see some temporary relief in the coming days, but that overall drivers will continue to feel pain at the pump as long as hostilities stemming from the U.S.-Iran war continue.

“If you’re in MI, IN, OH, IL, WI gas prices have been inching back down and that could continue now for a week or more, also the Canadian Prairies (SK, MB, AB) will see drops alongside the Great Lakes in the days ahead,” De Haan wrote.
